Fundraising

Because it’s more than a ride.

RAISING FUNDS & HOPE

This ride is true to its name. It’s about creating a cycle of hope for families who partner with Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley.

This year, we’re reminded just how much that matters. The current pandemic has not only heightened the housing crisis, it has created big challenges for Habitat for Humanity to serve more families and our communities.

Fortunately, cyclists know a little something about tackling big challenges. When you fundraise, you can make your support of Habitat really go the distance. With plenty of support from your Habitat Fundraising Coach, you can quickly create and share a fundraising page. And with fundraising incentives starting at just $100 raised, it’s a snap to rack up extra perks while you support a great cause. Fundraise on your own, or team up with other riders and pool your efforts. Either way, every dollar you raise will make a difference.

HOW TO FUNDRAISE

CLAIM – An email will be sent to you that has a unique link for your fundraising page. Click the “Claim your fundraising page” to get started!

CUSTOMIZE—Tell everyone why YOU are riding for Habitat. Have a favorite picture of yourself building on a Habitat for Humanity work site? Post it! Have a story about when you or someone you know was impacted by housing insecurity? Tell it! We all have unique connections to the housing crisis and we all have a shared goal of building more affordable homes.

CONNECT—We have so many means of connection these days–use them to support your fundraising efforts. Share a fun photo and your fundraising page via Instagram, put the link in your signature block, and post about it on Twitter. The Habitat fundraising team will be with you every step on your fundraising journey, offering tips and guidance.

THANK!—It is so important to thank your donors for supporting our cause of more affordable housing. This can be as simple as a quick text or call saying “thanks for the support, Grandma!” After the ride, make sure to let your network know how it went by sharing pictures and your final fundraising total.

fundraising tips

Your Cycle of Hope fundraising page is an easy way to raise the support Habitat needs to create affordable homeownership opportunities for families. By fundraising, you’ll help families go the distance – investing in their futures and building strong communities and legacies to last generations.

Now that you’re on the road to fundraising, here are some quick tips to help you maximize your efforts:

  1. First, set-up your page. You’ll get a unique URL and be able to customize your message. Make your message personal. Why do you support Habitat?
  2. Set a goal. Make it ambitious but achievable.
  3. Set an example and make a gift yourself. If you are able, make your gift a matching opportunity.
  4. Share, share, share your fundraising efforts on social media, email, or good ole’ fashion calling!
  5. Ask close friends if they will help you fundraise.
  6. Is there a business you frequent? Ask them to support you.
  7. Link your fundraising to a special date like a birthday or anniversary. Or make it in honor of someone special in your life.
  8. Be sure to thank supporters as quickly as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What it the best way to raise money?

Customize your fundraising page and tell your “why” story! Let your community know what you are doing and why you are doing it. “Affordable housing is extraordinarily important to me because…”

Include pics of you ascending that tough hill climb from last year’s Cycle of Hope, or you raising walls out at a Habitat site. Make a self-donation first to show everyone how important affordable housing is to you and ask your friends to match it. Share the link to your fundraising page on social media platforms and send out personalized emails. Call your grandma! Is your birthday coming up? Create an alternative-birthday fundraiser and ask for support instead of gifts.

If you’re still unsure of how to go about fundraising, don’t worry! Our fundraising coaches will be in touch with you to answer any questions you have.

What do I do if there are problems with the fundraising page?

Please contact Mae Pennington at (510) 803-3385 or at mpennington@habitatebsv.org

Do I have to join a team?

You don’t have to join a team but we think it’s more fun if you do! Ask friends and family if they’ll ride with you, come up with a punny team name, and get cycling.

However, if you decide to join a team after you’ve registered, please contact Mae Pennington at (510) 803-3385 or at mpennington@habitatebsv.org with that information and she will make the arrangements.

Can I use the Facebook Fundraiser platform to fundraise?

We highly encourage you to use the Cycle of Hope fundraising page you receive when you register. You can easily share your Cycle of Hope fundraising page url on Facebook to reach more friends and family. There are many tools built into the Cycle of Hope fundraising platform that allow you to customize your page with photos and space to express why you’re riding for more affordable housing.

If you do end up using the Facebook Fundraiser platform, please send an email to mpennington@habitatebsv.org alerting us of the page so that we can appropriately track the donations and credit your fundraising page.

Do you accept donations through Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)?

Absolutely! When requesting a donation through your Donor Advised Fund, remember that our organization’s full name is Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley and our tax EIN is 94-3053687. If you want the donation to go towards a specific rider’s fundraiser, include “Cycle of Hope 2020” and the rider’s name in the notes section of the request. Or send a heads-up with that information to mpennington@habitatebsv.org.

What can I do with cash or checks that people give me personally for the event?

Please make checks payable to Habitat for Humanity EBSV and send to:

Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley
Attn: Mae Pennington
2619 Broadway
Oakland, CA 94612

If possible, please provide the names and addresses of those donors so we can give them a tax-deductible receipt. Also, please make sure your name is included and so that we can credit your fundraising page.

Where do the funds raised go?

All funds raised go to our essential programs here at Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley. True to its name, this ride is about creating a cycle of hope for families who partner with Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley. This year, we’re reminded just how much that matters. Habitat is used to building in a crisis – the housing crisis that plagues us every day. The current pandemic has not only heightened that crisis, it has made it tougher to build. Your support is more needed and more appreciated than ever.

You can learn more about our affordable homeownership program here, our critical home repair program here, our Bridge Housing Communities partnership here, and our housing counseling program here.

What amount should I set as a fundraising goal?

Many of our riders find it much easier to exceed their goal than they expect! While there is no minimum fundraising amount, try to set a stretch-goal to work towards. That might be $500 for some or $10,000 for others. You aren’t required to fundraise for Cycle of Hope, but we strongly encourage it since all money raised goes directly to our essential programs.
